The Hotel: Cook Hotel,
National hotel of Kiribati
We loved the diving and the dive operator, but
disliked pretty much
everything else. We could have paid more and get air conditioned room,
but we didn't so that we had to fight to get a fan. It was hot and bed
was not comfortable. Food was not very good, and Gene and I even got
sick. Liquer in the bar looked so old that we were afraid of ordering
anything but beer. Later, Kim Anderson, the dive operator, told
us about the local store, and we bought wonderful tuna jerky, beer, and
canned cocktail. The island was very poor and the only modern
structures were
churches. We would love to go back, but we will definitely bring own
food.
Focus of the trip: diving on
Christmas Island
Dive Sites: Eel Pit, Wreck
Lone Star, Nasda Pier, Midway
Water Temperature: 80 F
(27 C)
This
is what Hawaii looked like long time ago. Fish were so abundant
it was hard to focus on one fish. Dolphins, mantas, eels, reef scorpion
fish, nudibranch, octopus, big puffer fish, scorpion fish, turtles---
Ocean was filled with the marine life.
